NinjaTrader review: is it worth it for a forex trader moving into currency and gold futures?
NinjaTrader is a futures broker with a free platform and three commission plans: Free, $99 a month and a $1,499 lifetime licence. We checked the plan maths, the currency and gold contracts and the extras a forex trader will miss.
7.6/10
NinjaTrader is a strong route for a forex trader who wants to trade currency and gold through regulated futures. Micro contracts need day margins from about $50, the platform is free, and commissions fall from $0.39 to $0.09 per micro side as you move from Free to the $1,499 Lifetime plan. It is a futures venue, not a spot forex broker: contracts expire, sizes are fixed and exchange fees sit on top. Casual traders should stay on the Free plan.

A forex trader's map of the futures world
If you trade EUR/USD and gold as CFDs or spot, futures feel like the same markets wearing a suit. The price is the same idea, but the plumbing is different. A futures contract has a fixed size, an expiry date and an exchange behind it. In return you get a central order book, published volume and no dealing desk on the other side.
NinjaTrader is one of the friendliest doors into that world. This review asks whether it is worth using once you have crossed over, and which of its three plans deserves your money. All figures come from its published pages and outside reviews, not from trades of our own.
The plan maths
The platform is free. What you choose is the commission plan, quoted per contract per side.
ninjatrader.com
NinjaTrader's pricing page: three plans, with commissions as low as $0.09 per micro contract.
Free charges $0.39 per micro and $1.29 per standard contract. Monthly costs $99 and charges $0.29 and $0.99. Lifetime costs $1,499 once and charges $0.09 and $0.59. Add exchange, clearing and NFA fees to every figure.
Work out the break-even. Monthly saves $0.10 per micro side, or $0.20 a round trip, so you need roughly 495 micro round trips a month to cover $99. On standard contracts it saves $0.60 a round trip, so about 165. Lifetime saves $0.60 a micro round trip against Free, so it needs around 2,500 micro round trips to repay $1,499, or about 1,070 standard ones. Under a hundred trades a month, the Free plan wins. Above a few hundred, the paid plans start to matter.
Currency and gold, in small sizes
For a forex trader the interesting contracts are the Micro EUR/USD future, M6E, and micro gold, MGC. The micro euro contract is one tenth of the standard size, and one benchmark test priced five contracts at $1.75 in fees. Micro gold covers 10 ounces against 100 for the standard contract, and BrokerChooser named NinjaTrader its best broker for micro gold in 2026.

The futures broker page pitches $50 day trading margins and low commissions on a phone-and-chart hero.
Day margins start at about $50 for micro contracts and $500 for standard E-minis, though the overnight margin is far larger. A day trader can therefore open a small account, and the same low margin is exactly what makes overtrading easy.
The browse-by-market page groups contracts into categories including index, energy, agriculture and cryptocurrency, plus currencies and metals.

What forex habits do not survive
Futures do not roll a swap, they expire. A quarterly euro contract must be closed or rolled, and the roll can cost a little. Price also moves in ticks whose dollar value is fixed by the exchange, so your pip maths changes. Session hours are long but not quite round the clock, and liquidity thins at the edges.
Another shift is the disclosure: futures brokers do not hide behind a spread. You see a bid, an ask and a commission, and you pay the exchange fee on top. Some traders find that clearer. Others miss the single number.
Software and the AI push
The desktop platform is the deep one, with charting, a strategy builder and a market replay tool. The web and mobile versions handle routine orders. The homepage now leads with AI tools built around futures: an assistant that links to your account, daily habit summaries and a strategy builder. Treat those as extras to test on the simulator, not a reason to open an account.
A sensible way to start
Open the account, take the 14-day trial of live streaming data, and spend the first fortnight on the free simulator with the micro euro contract. Log every trade with its contract, commission and exchange fee. At the end of two weeks you will know three things a pricing page cannot tell you: your real monthly round-trip count, how the tick value feels next to a pip, and whether the expiry calendar annoys you. Only then compare the $99 plan against the Free one using your own count. Moving from a $50 margin to a live account is the point where most beginners size up too fast, so keep the first live month at one micro contract.
Who should skip it
Skip NinjaTrader if you only want spot forex with tiny lot sizes, dislike expiry dates, or need a broker that bundles a large education library. Also skip the paid plans until your volume proves the break-even.
Verdict
A 7.6 for a genuine, low-cost entry to regulated currency and gold futures, with a small deduction for fee layering and a learning curve. Futures use leverage and can lose more than a deposit, and nothing here is personal advice.
